Ian Roberts was the superintendent of the Des Moines school district. He made claims about attending MIT Sloan school of business. He also claimed to have received recogntion as Principle of the year by George Washington University. MIT sayes he never attended. GW says it never gave such an award.
Academic fraud is yet another category. Individuals will embelish their academic record assuming no one will investigate such claims. In the Uresti case, Stan Bates claimed to have graduated from UNC Chapel Hill but he never attended. Academic fraud is so prevalent that when I have applied for a Professor position, the school demands the Registar at my alma mater send the transcript directly to the school, not to me. Once again, professional skepticism is required in all audits.
