Markets Edge Higher

 10/2/2025

The DOW was quiet this morning but rose later in the day finally selling off a bit late in the day.

DOW is still below 46714 so I am still on the belief that this is a second wave of a developing five down from the top.  SPX and NDX both up, the big bull does not give up easily,

I could not locate any one stock that caused the rise but it was modest at that.

The weekly new highs versus new lows chart looks much weaker than the DOW average. This is because the DOW is weighted heavily for certain stocks, the new high new low is not and therefore shows the market is buoyed by a handful of stocks,.

Ten year bond yields fell .44%, still aboe 3.98% so nothing else to report here.

Crude oil dropped $1.10 to 60.68. I will have a lot more to say in my newspaper column which will be posted tomorrow mornng.  Looks like we may be headed fora  re-test of the  $55 low.

Silver was off 87 cents in what looks like an outside reversal day to the downside. Parabolic rises end in collapse. Silver is way overbought do not buy now. Same for gold..

Newspaper column tomorrow morning and I will update more tomorrow after market close or this weekend

Let me know what you think of eh new site and psots at dennis.elam @att.net

The DOW, DOW theory, and Socionomics

 10/2/2025

Note long time readers have noted I often comment that typepad was not posting my charts. That has not been a problem with blogspot. I am surprised at how intuitive blogspot is for the user. 😁😁

Charles Dow created his Dow Theory in 1896.

Learn about the Dow Industrial Average here.

Interestingly Charles created the Transportation Average before the Industrials. Remember at the time railroads were still the one way to get around, no cars, no  airplanes.  Just this week I had to stop at a RR crossing for open cars carrying gravel. To this day RR are the only economical way to move heavy items like gravel.

I make reference to and you can read a good summary Elliott Wave here.

Here is a comment from the Wiki article.

Some analysts consider the Elliott wave principle as too dated to be applicable in today's markets, as explained by financial market analyst Glenn Neely, author of Mastering Elliott Wave:[10]

Elliott wave was an incredible discovery for its time. But, as technologies, governments, economies, and social systems have changed, the behavior of people has also. These changes have affected the wave patterns R. N. Elliott discovered. Consequently, strict application of orthodox Elliott wave concepts to current day markets skews forecasting accuracy. Markets have evolved, but Elliott has not.

I think not!  Humans still sell at the bottom and pile wildly in at the top. I have taught college accounting courses for some 25 years actually dating back to UTPB in the early 1990s. I have taught at four different universities. I see no difference in student behavior than I did in 1966-1972 at UT Austin in my BBA and MBA studies.  That covers 60 years a far time span for an experiment.

Times change People don't.

What has been will be again,
    what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.

Note this book is from the Old not the New Testament.
Here is the big picture.  I was in a meeetng this week. The speaker asked what is driving the price of gold.  His take was the deamnd for NVDA chips which contain gold. Uh no, in fact siocial mood has turned positive on gold, and now silver. This si why  people buy or sell things.

In the early 1990s gold bottomed at 180-190, social mood towards gold was negative.  Mood toward anything AI is wildly positive. And so NVDA trades at a 57x multiple. Mood was positive in fall 1929 when the Dow hit377-390. It was negative in the summer iof 1932 when it dropped to 43.  R N Elliott created his theory of five waves in the  1930s. Those waves explain human behavior especially relating to the stock market.  The stock market is a reflection of social mood as millions of investors make millions of decisions to buy or sell. Hence we can see mood on display.

It is easy to see how mood can affect interest in movies or music. Happy seek happy songs and movies Unhappy seek darker themses such as Dracula in the  1930s, the Exorcist in 1972 or Weapons and the Long Walk today.

ADP Reports Month to Month Job Loss

The Govt shutdown means that the jobs report that was to have been Friday morning will not be reported, so maybe Trump will not fire another BLS employee.  This is just another puzzle piece in establishing a probable market top.

Schools Dispute Ian Roberts Claims

 10/2/2025

Ian Roberts was the superintendent of the Des Moines school district.  He made claims about attending MIT Sloan school of business. He also claimed to have received recogntion as Principle of the year  by George Washington University. MIT sayes he never attended. GW says it never gave such an award.

Meet Ian Roberts

Academic fraud is yet another category. Individuals will embelish their academic record assuming no one will investigate such claims. In the Uresti case,  Stan Bates claimed to have graduated from UNC Chapel Hill but he never attended. Academic fraud is so prevalent that when I have applied for a Professor position, the school demands the Registar at my alma mater send the transcript directly to the school, not to me. Once again, professional skepticism is required in all audits.

HP Sues over Aiutonomy Fraud

 Timeline of the Atonomy Fraud

Like the Charlie Javice / J P Morgan story, how can a large firm like HP be so mislead?  How did DeLoitte, the Autonomy auditor, fail to see the inflated assets?  This is why i have the audit classes read these real world stories.

Meet Charlie Javice who conned J P Morgan out of $175 M

 Meet Charlie Javice

Ms Javice claimed her business, Frank,  assisting student with loan matters had  4 million clients.

Turns out it was less than 300,000. At age 33, pretty good fraud for a kid eh, she cannot teach Pilates with her required ankle bracelet.

As audit students how is it that a one of the four largest banks in the US could be so easily deceived?  Surely Morgan Chase employs plenty of CPAs, CIAs, and attorneys.  But it happened.

Great comment by the Judge,  Still, the judge criticized the bank, saying “they have a lot to blame themselves” after failing to do adequate due diligence. He quickly added, though, that he was “punishing her conduct and not JPMorgan’s stupidity.”

 10/1/2025 The Market Perspective

Welcome to our new site at blogspot.

the blue dots are the parabolic stop and reverse method develop[ed by Wells Wilder. Blue dots above price indicate a sell signal. Price is very close to breaking above the signal. PAR SAR is good to identify Elliott Waves.

Here the indicator had us long from t April low and one can see the distance between the indicator and price is narrowing.  Unless the DOW makes another high tomorrow we should be topping now.

Bonds

Interest rates have fallen the last few days but the ten year remains well above the  3.98% level.  Breaking below that might challenge the  3.88% level, in that case our bet that rates are rising is incorrect.  The Supreme Court will not take the case of Lisa Cook until January so she is still at the FED till then. Again, Trump is mistaking the over night rate which the FED sets following the 2 year note in my opinion with the far more important longer rates, the ten year being a proxy for mortgage rates, the average mortgage lasts about 12 years.

Silver

Silver has gone hyperbolic this means it looks like x squared rather than 2x. RSI is overdone at top as is PMO at bottom. Regret I missed getting onboard, silver  was not following gold and then went all in. I was in a meeting this week when the speaker asked why godl was going up. His answer was that the NVDA chips use gold.  The better answer is that social mood has turned positive to gold, which is why people buy anything.

Social mood is trending negative in some circles. Democrats and Republicans blame each other for the looming shutdown. Mamdami looks to win the NY Mayor race.  French  government fails. Everywhere I look someone is planning a bigger than ever building.  Such events occur at or near the end of a mania like the one we are in now. Waldorf Astoria completes a 8 year $6B make over, only 30 of its 3200+ condos have sold. Washington DC plans a $3.8 B football stadium. Project Marvel in SA plans a new basketball and baseball park downtown where there is no place to park.   Social mood is not a crystal ball but more a windsock of what may happen. There is always a mix of mood. Mood for stocks is wild but elsewhere, more  horror movies than I can  count for example, mood is trending negative.

Gee this was very much like typepad, noproblem adding graphs or the link for Marvel. I hope readers will enjoy the new site.
