At a then cost of $44 M Cleopatra nearly bankrupted Paramount. Today's cost would run about $480 M.
Ben Hur, Cleopatra and Lawrence of Arabia were made on the biggest film negatives possible at the time and still look great today. Understand what you see is real not digital, yes Cleopatra's barge is a real barge complete with working oars.
Cleopatra is an example of a budget out of control, or no budget, they started without a complete script. We are studying planing the audit, well this movie was jot planned and it made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Throw in the affair between Taylor and Burton and uou have a made for tabloid story.
